  • Frequently Asked Questions:

    1.  Where are you located?

We are currently located in beautiful downtown Homewood, IL at 18031 Dixie Hwy.

    2.  How often do you hold classes?

We currently hold classes 5 days a week on Monday - Thursday and Saturday.  Friday evening from 6 pm - 8 pm we hold an open mat that is available for anyone with grappling experience.

    3.  What classes do you offer?

We currently offer classes in Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay-Thai Kick Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts.  We have instructors who are skilled in each of these arts as well as grappling and wrestling.

    4.  How much does it cost?

We have memberships that will fit just about any budget.  We, as a standard, require a minimum of a six month membership but we will accept month to month memberships in special cases.  For more information on pricing please fill out the form located in the contact us area and we will be glad to answer your questions directly.

    5.  How long does it take to rank up?

We currently use the standard ranking practices provided by USA Judo and the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu family.  Each student learns at their own pace and therefore will recieve ranking at diffent times. A student who attends classes more regularly and/or competes on a regular basis will achieve rank more quickly than a student who does not.  PowerSource Martial Arts prides itself on being an "old school" academy.  This means that striping and/or promotions are at the sole disgretion of the Instructors.  Stripes and Promotions are earned and given, never asked for.

    6.  What are the current ranks for Judo and Jiu-Jitsu?

Currently there are rankings for both adults and kids in both martial arts.  Below are the current rankings and time lines that are recognized as industry standard.

It takes about 10 years, from start to finish to recieve your Black belt in BJJ.  It is commonly recognized that it takes about 6 months to a year to recieve your Blue belt (for adults) and then two- three years to your Purple Belt, three years to Brown and another three years to Black.  As we said before, these are simply guidelines, there are exceptions to every rule and some students will rank up faster than others.  The journey from white belt to black belt, in either art, requires tremendous commitment and dedication as well a hundreds of hours of training.

     7.  How much does ranking cost?

At PowerSource we are proud to announce that we do not "sell" ranks.  We do not charge for the rank in Judo, you will simply be asked to pay a nominal charge for the belt itself.  There is a pricing structure for Jiu-Jitsu ranking which varies depending on your anticipated rank.

    8.  How do you tie a belt correctly?

This is a question for the ages!  There are many different ways to tie your belt, however, there is only one correct way.  We have attached two videos, one for Judo and one for Jiu-Jitsu, that illustrates the correct way to tie each respective belt.

Unfortunately...no.  For your safety, and for the saftey of the other students, we require that anyone that does not have a striking of grappling background, of two years or more, participate in our other classes for 12 months (or at the disgretion of the instructor) prior to enrolling in MMA.

    9.  I am a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu student.  May I use my BJJ gi in your Judo classes?

Yes.  However, if you plan on competing in Judo, you will be required to purchase a traditional Judo Gi as outlined in the rules of Judo.
